WALES

Explore the rugged beauty of Wales's mountains and waterways

Wales: Land of Rivers and Mountains

Wales is one of the UK's most underrated and breathtaking destinations. Ancient mountain ranges, dramatic waterfalls, wild swimming spots and sweeping ridgelines that feel a world away from everyday life. From the towering peaks of Eryri to the lesser-known ranges of Mid Wales, there is so much to discover beyond the well-trodden paths.

At MTO we pride ourselves on taking people to places they might not have found on their own. Our Wales trips are built around hidden gems, unforgettable views and the kind of days you'll talk about for years. Every trip can be fully adapted to your group's pace, experience and ambitions — whether that means a leisurely swim in a mountain pool or pushing for a summit sunset with a hot chocolate in hand.

Arran Fawdwy

Difficulty: 3/5 — Intermediate

As mentioned throughout our trips we like to excel at taking people out to places where they might not necessarily have been before and this hidden Welsh gem is no exception. The views are stunning, the walking is simple, the waterfalls are swimmable and the day is just what can only be described as the perfect adventure! We offer this trip all year round depending on conditions, adjusting the start time to suit what you want from the day. Why not take a slower pace and enjoy a swim in the pools or the nearest lake? Start later in the afternoon and we'll catch a sunset on the summit with a hot chocolate. The world is our oyster — but first, why not explore this beautiful hidden gem of a hill tucked away in the Welsh countryside.

Moel Sych

Difficulty: 3.5/5 — Intermediate

Another hidden Welsh gem, Moel Sych is located in the Berwyn mountain range in Mid Wales, not far from Shrewsbury and the Midlands, making it a great day trip. Similar to Arran Fawdwy, the views and scenery are simply stunning. What makes Moel Sych special is that the walk finishes at the foot of Pistyll Rhaeadr — the highest single drop waterfall in Wales.

It's a simple walk following a long winding river with plenty of mini waterfalls along the way, which of course means plenty of places to swim! Small rocky scrambles and ledges line the path before reaching a small Llyn where we stop for lunch. From there it's a wide ridge climb to the summit where you have the chance to bag two 800m peaks with panoramic views across the Welsh countryside.

Once we've taken in the two summits we follow the ridge back down and make our way to the top of Pistyll Rhaeadr — don't get too close! We then follow the path to the bottom of the waterfall where there's a cafe waiting for us to sit and enjoy the view in all its glory. This trip can be run at any time of year and like all our trips, can be fully adapted to your group.

The Welsh 3000's

Difficulty: 4/5 — Good Hill Walking Experience Required

The Welsh 3000's is an iconic route across all of the three thousand foot peaks in Eryri national park. The classic challenge is to complete all 14 peaks in 24 hours — an amazing achievement — and we do offer this as a guided challenge. However, here at MTO we love the idea of taking our time, exploring off the beaten track and enjoying the moment rather than rushing through it.

We follow the route but split it across multiple days with camping along the way, opening up the chance for a far more relaxed experience with sunrises, sunsets and the space to really take in some truly breathtaking peaks. Starting at the foot of the PYG track we make our way up Crib Goch before summiting Ugain and then Yr Wyddfa, the highest mountain in Wales. We then cross to the Glyderau range where we set up camp for the night, summiting as the group decides. After the Glyderau we head down to the Ogwen valley with an option to stay in a hostel, before tackling Pen yr Ole Wen and completing the Carneddau range, finishing at Aber Falls.

Due to the nature of this walk we keep groups to a maximum of 6 people, minimising our environmental impact when camping and keeping everyone together on the mountain.
